"We stand by you in solidarity as you meet some very difficult requirements from the IMF and European Union," Biden said following his meeting with Papademos
, stressing also that "it is overwhelmingly in the interest of the United States that Greece work its way through this financial crisis and that it remain a strong and vital part of the European Union."
On his part, Papademos stressed the long ties
of close friendship, shared values and struggles for freedom and democracy between the two countries, noting the significant and consistent U.S. support for Greece. The two men had also substantive and productive discussions on important issues of mutual interest, as well as on ways to foster their economic relations.
Biden also met with President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias, PASOK leader George Papandreou, and New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras.
