Socialist International & the Arab Spring in Greece
31 October, 2011

The Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) hosted a meeting of the newly established Socialist International Special Committee on the Arab World, on the island of Crete (October 28-29).

Addressing the Committee, Prime Minister and President of the Socialist International George Papandreou urged the countries that experienced the Arab spring to use the transitional period they are currently undergoing in order to forge the institutions necessary to guarantee the establishment of democracy.

He further noted that Greece and the island of Crete in particular, have stood close to many of the countries which went through revolutionary changes.

Greece has historic ties with the Arab world and can thus play a distinctive role in the future, said the Premier, adding that the West must restore relations, which in the past may have been bruised by various reasons, such as dictatorships, the Cold War or even the Middle East issue.
