Head of EU 'Task Force' arrives in Greece
14 September, 2011

The head of European Commission Task Force for Greece, Horst Reichenbach arrived in Athens yesterday and met with Government’s Vice-president and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos and Development, Competitiveness and Shipping Minister Michalis Chryssohoidis.

"Our job is to support the Greeks so that they complete the programme they have agreed to through technical assistance. The most important job for me is to coordinate this assistance and bring a sign of hope to the Greeks," Reichenbach said before meeting with Venizelos, adding that "we would not be here if we didn’t believe that Greece is capable of pulling through."

The meeting between Chryssohoidis and Reichenbach focused on the technical assistance the task force can provide for speeding up projects within the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF 2007-2013). "The Task Force can have a decisive impact on the better utilization of EU investment subsidies and the creation of a new model of growth for the country," Chryssohoidis noted.

The Task Force was launched in June to coordinate the efforts of technical assistance that Greece may need in order to deliver the EU-IMF adjustment programme and accelerate the absorption of EU funds. It will provide quarterly progress report to the Greek authorities and the Commission, with the first one expected to be released by the end of October.

Today, Reichenbach will be the keynote speaker at a joint bilateral European Chambers conference titled: Recovery Now – A Herculean Labour for Greece.
