Prime Minister and Socialist International (SI) President George Papandreou hosted a SI Council meeting in Athens on July 2-3.
"We have the abilities but also the strength to succeed," the premier said, stressing his own confidence in Greece's human potential while, on the young generation, he said that "today's generation is the most educated the country has ever had."
On the sidelines of the SI conference, Papandreou held separate meetings with heads of socialist and social-democratic parties and movements, such as Turkey’s main opposition Republican Party President Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Serbia’s President Boris Tadic, the President of Iraq Jalal Talabani, the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Yiannakis Omirou, the joint president of the Social-democratic party of FYROM Radmila Sekerinska as well as China's Deputy International Relations Minister Liu Zieyi.
Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists (PES), in an interview with NET radio station, said that European leaders should have given more breathing space to Greece for investments and growth and expressed his absolute solidarity and support for Prime Minister George Papandreou. The PES leader further said that there is a leadership deficit in Europe.
"We have a problem on agreeing on real European solutions" and referred to Greece as an example, saying that "there were given too late" and that "they should have been more European."
