FM Droutsas meets UNSG envoy for Libya; Humanitarian aid promised
17 May, 2011

Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas met, on May 14, with UN Secretary General’s special envoy for Libya Abdul Ilah Khatib for talks on the ongoing situation in the country.

"Greece fully supports the efforts toward a peaceful solution of the Libya crisis" Droutsas told reporters following the talks and announced that Greece will send officials and humanitarian aid to the rebels in Benghazi.

According to Droutsas, a vessel with humanitarian aid and a medical team is due to dock in Benghazi this week, while a delegation of Foreign Ministry officials would be based in the eastern Libyan city to act as a liaison with the National Transitional Council (NTC).

"We cannot reach a solution in Libya through military means alone" said Droutsas, reiterating that a political solution is necessary and Greece will continue to contribute in this direction. On his part, Abdul Ilah Khatib said that "Greece is an important player and we all value the role it plays in the region, […] as well as appreciate its willingness to contribute in improving the humanitarian situation."
