Premier Papandreou backs action to enforce Libya truce
20 March, 2011

Prime Minister George Papandreou travelled to Paris on March 19 to take part in an emergency meeting of European, US and Arab leaders on the crisis in Libya.

"This meeting showed the determination of the international community, the United Nations but also the leadership of the Arab League and the Arab countries to put an end to violence which is perpetuated by the regime in Libya and to make sure that there is a ceasefire in this country" said Papandreou, adding that the international community will be now enforcing the decisions of the United Nations Security Council.

Later on Saturday, Papandreou addressed a conference of Socialist International members at the Acropolis Museum, reiterating that "the message of the international community via UN Security Council resolution 1973 is clear and there is no way we will tolerate the murder of innocent civilians."

On his part, Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas said that "we are prepared to assist, in cooperation with our partners and allies, so that international legality may be respected."
