U.S.State Department on FYROM 'name issue'
18 July, 2008

U.S. State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack refrained on Thursday from commenting on a letter sent by Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) prime minister designate Nikola Gruevski to Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

Replying to a question on Gruevski's letter, which claimed the "existence" of a "Macedonian minority" in Greece, and a reaction to it by Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, McCormack said that this was a matter between Greece and its northern neighbour, adding that the U.S. would like to see the two countries "work out the name issue, which is a completely different topic."

"We certainly would like to see those negotiations come to a successful completion soon," he added.
