Greek merchant fleet posts growth

The Greek merchant fleet grew to 2,066 vessels overall in May 2008, marking a 5.0 percent increase since January 2001, according to figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Service (ESYE), while overall capacity rose to 38,684,835 dwt., marking a 41.6 percent rise in the same period.

Of the total merchant vessels: 627 are freighters, accounting for 14,804,402 dwt; 516 are tankers, with 22,139,990 dwt; and 923 are passenger ships and other vessels, accounting for 1,740,443 dwt.

Also, according to ESYE, the following were also noted in the period from January 2001 to May 2008:

- Increase of 5.0 percent in total number of merchant ships
- Increase of 41.6 percent in overall deadweight tonnage
- Increase of 0.3 percent in cargo (freighter) ships
- Increase of 24.6 percent in freighter ship capacity (dwt)
- Increase of 12.9 percent in tanker ships
- Increase of 57.1 percent in tanker ship capacity
- Increase of 4.3 percent in passenger and other vessels
- Increase of 29.3 percent in tanker and other ships capacity (dwt)
