Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis held talks here on Sunday with her Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni, the first stop of her Middle East tour.
"We believe that it's our responsibility as Europeans to operate constructively and contribute in the peace process to the greatest degree possible," Bakoyannis said after her meeting with Livni.
On her part, Livni recognised the significant role of the Quartet, of which the European Union is a member. Referring to the Quartet and to the Arab League, she noted that "to the degree in which we share the same targets, there are margins and initiatives."
On Sunday night, the Greek foreign minister met with the leader of the Meretz-Yaclad party, Yossi Beilin.
On Monday morning she will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. Later in the day she will meet the Patriarch of Jerusalem and then depart for Ramallah. There, she is expected to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and the head of the PLO's chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.
