Minister Avramopoulos speaks in London on 'the legacy of the Olympic Games'
31 March, 2006

Greece's Health and Social Solidarity Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos was the main speaker at an event organized by East London University on Thursday on the legacy of the Olympic Games for host cities.

The Greek minister presented figures and data on the Greek experience from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and stressed among other things:” The Olympic Games created a stronger Greek economy. More than 100,000 Greeks had the technical and technocratic training in the framework of the Olympic Games, something which is a very important investment in Greece's labor potential.

"During the preparation and hosting also of the Athens Olympiad, 100,000 new jobs were created, a great number of which are also maintained today.

"Post-Olympic Games Greece is a stronger country internationally. Greece became a particularly popular tourism destination, as it is recognized that Greece today is a safe country, with a low crime rate, and a friendly tourism environment."

Referring to the Olympic Games in London in 2012, Avramopoulos said:"Be sure that the hosting of the 2012 Olympiad is a very important investment for your next generations. It will bring a fresh wind to the city of London, which it needs."
