The latest Euro-barometer study on "Europeans and Languages" shows that 49 percent of Greek respondents declared their ability to communicate in at least one foreign language, a figure that closely corresponds with the Community average.
Additionally, 44 percent of Greek respondents listed English as their second language, followed by 8 percent listing French and German and 3 percent Italian.
English is also the most widely spoken language in the Union, with 34 percent of EU citizens using English as their second language (after their native tongue). German follows with 12 percent, and French with 11 percent.
