Government denies report of armed US guards for American Olympic team
04 June, 2004

The Greek government on Thursday categorically denied a press report that it had made a commitment to allow the unhindered presence of armed Americans during the Olympic Games.

According to a report appearing in an Athens daily, the government had committed itself to permitting American guards accompanying the US Olympic team to bear arms.

Public Order Minister George Voulgarakis stressed once again that no such issue had been or would be raised, while noting that "such inaccuracies and rumors do not further the national cause, especially at a time when the planning of Olympics security has been completed and has begun to be put into effect."
